Readers of New Delhi edition ‘The Hindu’ newspaper woke up on the new year day of 2012 only to realise the servitude and reverence of a Congress leader to his political master, Sonia Gandhi aka Antonio Maino aka Madamji. A full front page advertisement by Vasanthakumar, General Secretary of TNCC was the one who sponsored it. The ad contained a reference to a conversation between Lord Sri Ram and Hanuman during which Hanuman expresses his devotion to his master. Above this reference ran a huge headline stating the obvious, “We remain, Madamji, ever at your feet”.

The culture of sycophancy that is prevalent among most of India’s political parties in general and Congress in particular is best displayed in this ad. I say Congress in particular because the manner in which leaders go out of their way to please Madamji and her coterie is a cut above the rest of the parties. This kind of behaviour by the members of political parties towards their leaders is a characteristic feature of the political parties in third world democracies.

There is a strange feeling of emptiness at this point. I do not know if I will be able to express this state of mind in words. I can sense a mix of different emotions beneath this emptiness. I sense in it an element of fear, impatience, despair. I can also sense in it a sweeping wave of hope, optimism and a thrill about still being able to be in the pursuit.

Sometimes, I surprise myself with my ability in facing the hard times. The kind of optimism I maintain when the chips are down is quite well known to those who know me from close quarters. I admit there are situations in which it defies logic and may even looks foolish to think of an entirely different and positive possibility to things when the reality tempts you to take a totally negative view point.  Read the rest of this entry »

Note to self:

I have had my dreams and I have had my nightmares, but I have conquered my nightmares because of my dreams. – Dr. Jonas Salk

One of the best things about Delhi is that it is abuzz with a variety of programmes. There is something for everyone all the time. Every morning when I get the newspaper I am used to glancing over the long list of programmes that happen here daily and most often sigh about my situation. There is hardly any time left in between preparation and test series. Also, say, in case I go to some program I would not be able to enjoy it properly because I can sense someone pointing a finger at me. So, in short, I have missed out on almost all the major programmes that have happened in Delhi over the last two years (and for good reason) with the exception of the International Book Fair in 2010. However, yesterday was an exception. I read about a Kathak performance by Pandit Birju Maharaj and the students from his Kalashram at ICCR. It was a snap decision and I decided to be there. Couple of friends from my previous hostel also joined me.

The programme, Kavi Guru Pranam, was organised to commemorate Rabindranath Tagore’s 150th birth centenary. So, the programme featured Kathak dance choreography based on poems and songs written by Tagore. The evening started with a beautiful group choreography titled ‘Ashtanayika’. Then there was a performance by Mamta Maharaj, daughter of Birju Maharaj, in which she portrayed a portion of Tagore’s poetry where Gandhari asks the King and society to punish her sons since they have committed wrong. The easiness with which she played different characters was fascinating. Read the rest of this entry »

I know it has been a long time since my last post. But thankfully I am not having any dearth of ideas or topics to write about. It is just that I am too caught up with different stuff. And that is good because my old blog became ‘shunyam’ since I came to a stage when I started thinking there was nothing to write about when in fact a lot was happening in my life. So, yeah, the situation is better now. Much better.

It just struck me other day that I should blog about my Delhi days since I am about to complete two years at Delhi in another two months.  Read the rest of this entry »
